25 Interior Decorating Tips

11 arrange a picture gallery. Hang a grouping of pictures for a gallery look. Space your pictures between 2”-2 ½”apart and hang them approximately 8"-9” above your sofa or chairs.

12 try a quick and easy update. Area rugs add colour and pattern to a room. Select a rug large enough to allow the legs of your sofa and chairs to sit on it. In the dining room the chairs should remain on the rug even when pulled out from the table.

13 make a statement. Powder rooms are a great place to make a statement. Experiment with a bold paint colour or a strong patterned wallpaper in this small isolated space.

14 choose wisely. When building or renovating invest in pieces that fit your lifestyle. Consider kids, pets and entertaining.

15 be design savvy. In the bathroom, cut your tile budget in half by creating tiled wainscoting tiling only the bottom half and painting the wall above.

16 mix styles. Use modern touches in a traditional room, or vice versa. It’s a simple way to update a space.

17 add colour! Adding a bold or bright colour to a space keeps it looking fresh and young.

18 go with the flow. Pull your furniture out from the walls to create a cosier atmosphere and improve the flow of traffic in a room.

19 save and splurge. Mix splurge or expensive items with affordable finds.

20 use flower power. Inexpensive carnations (without ferns) add color to a room. Cut the stems short and use a small to medium wide mouthed vase.

21 create balance. Hang a minimum of six matted and framed photos for a well-balanced arrangement.

22 edit accessories. Remove all accessories in a room and display only the items you love. Store others for future use.

23 dress your windows. Hang ready-made floor to ceiling drapes for a custom look. Use 2-3 panels on each side to create fullness.

24 add interest. Create a feature wall in a bedroom or office using grasscloth wallpaper. It is a great way to add warmth and cosiness to either a contemporary or traditional room. Hire a professional to install.

25 banish shadows In the bathroom, use a sconce on either side of the mirror for the most flattering light. Position your sconces 66" from the floor to the center of the fixture.

26 go bold. Rooms with plenty of windows can handle dark colors. Avoid adding too many accessories and let the bold colour take center stage.
